We understand how much you care about your child's oral health and smile. Even with brushing and flossing, cavities or accidents can damage a baby tooth. Ideally, we want your child to keep their primary teeth until permanent teeth erupt naturally. But sometimes, a tooth might be too weak or broken for a filling. That's where pediatric dental crowns come in!

What are Pediatric Crowns?

Crowns are tiny caps that are cemented onto a child's tooth. They're used to:

  • Restore a tooth's shape: If a tooth is chipped or worn down, a crown can fix its appearance.
  • Strengthen a weak tooth: If a tooth is badly decayed or damaged, a crown can protect it from further breakage.

When are Crowns Needed?

Crowns are typically recommended for baby teeth that are:

  • Broken
  • Worn down
  • Severely decayed (not fixable with a filling)

Types of Crowns

Crowns can be made from different materials, each with its own advantages:

  • Porcelain: These crowns look most natural, especially for front teeth, because they mimic the translucency of real teeth.
  • Metal: These crowns are very strong and durable, making them a good choice for back teeth that take a lot of chewing force.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): These combine the aesthetics of porcelain with the strength of metal, making them a versatile option.

The Crown Procedure

Unlike fillings, crowns aren't placed directly in one visit. Here's the process:

  • Impression: We take a mould of your child's tooth to create a custom-made crown.
  • Fabrication: The crown is made in a dental lab based on the impression.
  • Placement: Once the crown is ready, we'll gently place it over your child's tooth and cement it securely.

Crowns are designed to fit seamlessly with your child's bite and jaw movements, allowing them to chew and speak comfortably.

Stainless Steel Crowns

Dental crowns made of stainless steel are thought to be an excellent short-term fix for saving a primary tooth until its permanent counterpart erupts and takes its place. It's crucial to save the main tooth if at all possible. A stainless steel crown can be used to restore a primary tooth in just one visit.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconium dioxide is a white powdered ceramic substance used to make zirconia dental crowns. Compared to other kinds of ceramic crowns, zirconia is tougher and more durable when it is made from a solid block. Zirconia's smoothness reduces wear and tear on neighboring teeth as well.

Because of zirconia's strength, crowns made of it can be placed with less removal of the healthy tooth structure beneath them and endure longer than crowns made of other materials. Preserving as much of the original tooth as possible is always preferable, as it prolongs the life of the crown and the tooth.
